Buying notes for Black History Month
The ranked product data for February is almost identical to every other month: totes, pens, mugs, water bottles. That tells you something useful — there is no distinctive Black History Month product. The differentiation is entirely in what you put on it, which is exactly why this one deserves more thought than the purchase order usually gets.
Commission the artwork
The strongest February pieces are ones where an organization paid a Black artist or designer for original work and put that on the tote instead of a stock graphic and a slogan. It costs more up front, it takes longer, and it is the difference between an item people keep and an item people quietly leave on the table.
If you’re a university or a large employer, your own students and staff are often the right place to look. An internal design call also solves the credibility problem, because the work came from the community it’s for.
Full-color, not one-color
Original artwork usually means multiple colors, which pushes you toward full-color print, DTG on apparel and sublimation on drinkware rather than screen or pad print. Budget for that. A detailed illustration knocked down to a single-color screen print loses the thing you paid for.
Cotton totes and journals take detailed artwork better than non-woven polypropylene, which is cheap but has a texture that eats fine linework. If the design has any subtlety in it, spend the extra on the substrate.
Order in January, not February
February is short, and if the artwork is being commissioned you now have a design timeline in front of the production timeline. Start in December if the design isn’t finished. Rushing a February order into the first week of February is the most common way these programs end up using stock graphics after all.
