National Blood Donor Month

JANUARY · CAUSE

National blood donor month.

January is when supply is thinnest and recruitment is hardest. The giveaway is doing more work here than in almost any other month.

Blood centers run January hard for a reason: holiday travel and winter illness knock donations down right when trauma volume doesn’t. Every blood bank, hospital system and corporate drive organizer is competing for the same donors in the same four weeks, and the incentive item is a bigger part of that pitch than most people admit.

The T-shirt is the recruitment tool

Donor T-shirts are not a thank-you, they’re advertising worn by someone who already said yes. That changes what makes a good one. It has to be something a donor will actually wear in public — which means a decent blank, a design that isn’t just a logo, and sizes that go past XL. A shirt that lives in a drawer recruits nobody.

Order sizes generously toward the large end. Blood drives skew older and broader than event merch generally does, and running out of 2XL by hour two is the most common complaint we hear from drive organizers.

What goes in the canteen bag

The post-donation table needs different things: something to drink from, something to carry the snack home in, and a pen for the paperwork. Water bottles do double duty here — donors are told to hydrate for the rest of the day, so a bottle handed over at the canteen table gets used immediately and then keeps getting used.

Keep the small stuff genuinely small. Under-a-dollar items work at a drive because volume is unpredictable — you’d rather over-order a cheap item than run short of an expensive one in front of a queue.

Corporate drives need their own item

If you’re an employer hosting a drive rather than a blood center running one, resist reusing the center’s shirt. Your people are giving up an hour of the workday; a company-specific item marks that as something the organization did, not something that happened in the lobby. A tumbler or a soft item beats another branded pen here.
