Library buying has a particular shape: small budgets, a board or Friends group that has to approve the spend, and an audience that will genuinely use a tote bag. It’s one of the few markets where the product and the mission line up perfectly — people are literally there to carry books home.

The tote is not optional

Every ranked list for February libraries is led by bags, and it should be. A library tote gets used weekly, carries weight, and advertises the library across the whole town. That also means it has to survive: check the gusset and the handle stitching, and go up in weight from the cheapest non-woven if the bag will carry hardbacks.

Jumbo sizes matter more here than in most categories. A tote that fits a stack of picture books is a different product from one sized for a conference.

Cheap, countable, and for kids

Summer reading programs and story time need volume at pennies: pencils, stickers, bookmarks, mood pencils that change color in a warm hand. These get handed out by the hundred and nobody wants to ration them. Under-a-dollar items exist for exactly this.

One caution on anything aimed at young children: check age-appropriateness on small parts and novelty items before ordering for a children’s department.

Make the Friends group’s job easy

If the item is going to be sold as a fundraiser rather than given away, price it backward from what a patron will actually pay at a desk — usually ten or fifteen dollars for a tote. Work out the unit cost that leaves a real margin before you fall in love with a bag. We can quote at a few quantity breaks so the board can see where the economics turn.
