Nurses Week runs May 6 to 12 every year, ending on Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The dates don’t move, which makes this the easiest deadline on the calendar to plan for and the least excusable one to miss. Hospitals, staffing agencies, nursing schools and unions all buy for it.

Buy for a twelve-hour shift

The test for any Nurses Week item is whether it survives a shift. Badge reels and lanyards get worn every day and wear out constantly, so they’re always welcome. A good pen matters because nurses lose them constantly. An insulated tumbler that keeps coffee hot through a long shift is the single most reliably appreciated item in this category.

Check your facility’s policy on lanyards before ordering — many clinical settings require breakaway safety lanyards, and a standard one won’t be allowed on the floor.

Don’t put it in a tote and call it appreciation

Nursing staff are on the receiving end of more appreciation-week merchandise than almost any other profession, and the goodwill wears thin when the item is obviously the cheapest thing available in bulk. One decent item beats a bag of five branded trinkets, every time. If the budget only covers trinkets, spend it on fewer people-facing units and better quality.

Count night shift

The most common practical failure with Nurses Week orders isn’t the product, it’s the quantity. Day shift takes everything, and nights and weekends get the leftovers. Count actual headcount across all shifts and per-diem staff, then add ten percent. Running short here does more damage than not doing it at all.
