Band & Music Merchandise

EVENTS · SCHOOL & KIDS

Band and music merch.

Touring acts, school bands and venues. The merch table is often the only part of the night that turns a profit.

For most acts below arena level, the merch table earns more than the door. That makes this a straight retail calculation: unit cost against what someone will pay standing in front of you at eleven at night, minus whatever the venue takes.

Know the venue cut before you price

Many venues take a percentage of merch sales, sometimes a substantial one. Work that into the unit economics before deciding quantities, because a margin that looks healthy at the printer can be thin by the time the venue has taken its share.

Small, light, high-margin

Everything travels in a van, so weight and volume are costs. Keychains, pins, stickers and koozies carry excellent margins, take almost no space, and sell to people who will not spend thirty dollars on a shirt. Bring those in depth and apparel in a tighter size run.

School bands are funding a trip

A school band programme is running a fundraiser, not a tour. The buyer is a parent supporting the trip, so the item needs to be worth its price on its own terms rather than as a souvenir of a show. Undated designs sell all season; the competition-specific shirt sells for one weekend.
