Buying notes for Races & Marathons
A race shirt is the most scrutinized item in promotional products. Runners have strong opinions about fabric, they compare shirts between events, and a bad one is remembered for years. It is also ordered against a registration number that is not final until close to the day.
Never cotton
Heavy cotton is the classic mistake — runners will not run in it, and a shirt that only gets worn to mow the lawn has not done its job. Performance polyester or a poly blend is the standard, it takes sublimation and full-color well, and it costs less than the goodwill of getting it wrong.
Size down, not up
A running field skews smaller than the general population, and unisex sizing runs large on this crowd. Weight the run toward small and medium, offer a women’s cut if the budget allows, and if you must guess, guess low — leftover race shirts with a date on them have no second life at all.
Bibs and towels are sponsor space
You are printing race bibs anyway, so that is inventory you have already paid for — sponsors will pay to be on them. Cooling towels handed out at the finish get used within seconds and photograph well, which makes them the best-value item on the course.
