Notebook quality is judged by paper before cover. Thin stock ghosts and bleeds with any decent pen, which undermines an otherwise premium-feeling gift. Ask about paper weight — anything at or above 80gsm handles gel and fountain pens acceptably. Binding sets the use case. Hardcover perfect-bound journals feel like a book and are the standard for executive gifting. Spiral binding lies flat and folds back on itself, which is what people want for note-taking in meetings and on job sites. Dot-grid interiors have largely displaced ruled lines for planning and sketching. Leather and leatherette covers are debossed — the logo is pressed in, sometimes with foil — which is the most durable and most premium decoration. Softcover and recycled board covers are screen or digitally printed. Minimum order quantities are set per item, typically 100 to 250 pieces with 3% spoilage covered and artwork kept on file for two years.
