T Shirt Measurements: A Guide to the Perfect Fit.

The t shirt measurements that matter for a bulk order are chest width, body length, shoulder width, sleeve length and hem width, measured with the shirt laid flat. Compare those numbers from a shirt your team already likes against the size chart of the exact blank you are buying, and use them to set both the size mix and the logo placement.

Why do t shirt measurements matter for bulk orders?

Because every sizing mistake is multiplied by every unit on the order. Shirts that fit badly do not get worn, which means wasted budget, hallway size swaps and reorders that rarely land before the event or start date.

  • Budget waste: Replacement orders follow a guessed size mix.
  • Brand inconsistency: A good logo on a badly fitting shirt still feels cheap.
  • Distribution delays: Team leads end up sorting and swapping sizes instead of handing out kits.
  • Lower wear: People do not reach for a shirt that fits wrong, especially a uniform.

Label sizes are a marketing category, not a measurement. I’d hold the chart up against how your group actually wears things and decide from there.

Tie measurements to the use case. A daily warehouse or service uniform needs tighter tolerance than a one-day trade show handout. For the bigger picture on shirt programs, see our guide to custom apparel t-shirts.

Which t shirt measurements should you check?

Check chest width, body length, shoulder width, sleeve length and hem width. Size labels help sort cartons; these measurements tell you how the shirt is actually built and let you compare styles fairly.

An infographic illustrating four key body measurements for choosing a T-shirt: chest, waist, length and sleeve.
MeasurementHow it is takenWhat it affects
Chest widthFlat, side seam to side seam just below the sleevesComfort, mobility, fitted versus boxy look
Body lengthHigh point of shoulder to bottom hemTucking, layering, how long or short the shirt reads
Shoulder widthShoulder seam to shoulder seamHow cleanly the shirt sits on the upper frame
Sleeve lengthShoulder seam to sleeve edgeRetail-ready versus promotional look
Hem widthFlat across the bottom hemStraight versus tapered body shape

A flat measurement is half the circumference, so double chest width to compare it with a body chest measurement. Some styles add width faster than length between sizes and others add length aggressively, which is why width and length need to be reviewed together.

If you check one thing before approving a size run, check the measurement chart rather than the label. The label tells you a brand category. The chart tells you how the shirt is actually built.

How do you measure a t-shirt laid flat?

Lay a shirt the wearer already likes flat on a firm table, smooth it without stretching, and measure with a straight tape. Beds, couches and carpet distort the edges and shorten the readings.

A step-by-step guide showing how to measure a T-shirt and how to measure your body.
  1. Pick the benchmark shirt. Use one that has proven itself through a full day of wear and washing, and suits the same job as the new shirt.
  2. Measure chest width straight across the front, side seam to side seam, just below the sleeves.
  3. Measure body length from the highest point of the shoulder near the collar straight down to the hem.
  4. Add shoulder, sleeve and hem width so fit and decoration issues show up before the order, not after.
  5. Compare two or three favorite shirts. A tight range is a better target than a single garment.

Teams that record only chest width are the ones surprised when large sizes run long and the print sits too low on small sizes.

How do you measure a person for a t-shirt?

Measure the chest at its fullest point with the tape level, the natural waist, and the sleeve from the shoulder to the preferred end point, standing relaxed. Use this when there is no benchmark shirt, such as for new hires or event registrants.

  1. Stand naturally, without pulling the chest out or the stomach in.
  2. Measure the chest at the fullest part, tape level all the way around.
  3. Measure the natural waistline to choose between standard and fitted cuts.
  4. Measure sleeve length from the shoulder to where the sleeve should end.
  5. Record height for groups with a wide range of body types, since it explains different body-length needs.

Always check body numbers against the finished garment chart before ordering. Teams that already collect measurements for custom safety vests can reuse that process.

Do t-shirts change size after washing?

Yes, they can. Fabric type and laundering habits together can shift chest and length measurements away from the chart you approved, so post-wash behavior should be part of choosing the blank.

Hands stretching a piece of grey fabric.
  • Uniform use: Prioritize stability and tolerance for repeated laundering. A cotton-heavy shirt that tightens after washing will draw complaints fast.
  • Giveaway use: Prioritize broad appeal and an easy fit. A softer blend can be more forgiving here.

Fit style matters as much as fabric: a classic cut gives more room through chest and waist than a slim cut with the same label. “Same size, different blank” is one of the most expensive assumptions in custom apparel.

We'd rather you judge a shirt on its fourth wash than its first wear. A shirt isn't finished when it comes out of the box, and for the wearer the real fit test starts at the laundry.

How do measurements affect logo placement?

Garment dimensions set the print area, so the same art file can look balanced on a large and oversized on a small. Decorators position chest graphics relative to the neckline and often scale artwork down for the smallest sizes and up for extended sizes.

Ask for the imprint area of the exact blank in writing before artwork goes to proof. Left-chest and full-front dimensions vary by style, and a number carried over from a previous order is a common reason a proof has to be redone.

  • Left chest: Make sure the mark does not drift low on small sizes or look lost on large ones.
  • Full front: Watch seam interference and visual weight on shorter body lengths.
  • Mixed size runs: Ask whether art will be scaled by size group or held constant.
  • Cotton-heavy garments: Post-wash changes can also shift how centered the print looks.

How do you plan the size mix for a bulk order?

Collect exact sizes whenever the audience is known, such as employees, school staff or recurring team kits. When you cannot, start from your own past orders for a similar audience and adjust for the garment and use case rather than guessing a generic split.

An infographic showing benefits of smart sizing for bulk custom apparel orders.
  • Build a size plan per blank. A unisex tee like the Gildan Softstyle Ringspun Adult T-Shirt and a fitted option like the Red Kap Womens Cooling Short Sleeve Tee need separate splits.
  • Do not reuse a tee mix for polos. Custom polo shirts fit and wear differently.
  • Add depth in extended sizes for daily wear, outdoor work or shirts layered over other clothing.
  • Protect middle sizes at public events without neglecting extended sizes.
  • Order youth sizes separately for family events, using a blank such as the Kids T-Shirt (Youth).
  • Use one measurement standard across locations so every branch gets the same fit.

Giveaways can tolerate a broader estimate because some overage is expected. Uniform orders cannot, since bad sizing means direct replacement cost and an inconsistent look across locations.

T shirt measurement FAQs

How is t-shirt chest width measured?

Lay the shirt flat and measure straight across the front from side seam to side seam, just below the sleeves. Double that number to get the approximate chest circumference.

Where does t-shirt length start?

Body length runs from the highest point of the shoulder next to the collar straight down to the bottom hem. Measure the front of the shirt laid flat.

Are size charts the same across brands?

No. A large in one blank can measure quite differently from a large in another, and fit styles vary too. Always compare the chart for the exact blank you are ordering against a benchmark shirt.

Should I size up for shrinkage?

It depends on the fabric and how the shirts will be washed. Ask about the blank’s post-wash behavior; for uniforms in cotton-heavy fabric, a little extra margin can prevent complaints.
